Dr. Sarah is a learning and development consultant at a technology firm, where she supports clients in all industries as they undergo changes to their enterprise technology. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Classical Studies and English Literature from the University of Arkansas, a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School, and a PhD in ancient religion and critical theory from Harvard University. Before transitioning into a career in tech, Dr. Sarah was an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Hamilton College.
As a first-generation student from a region in the US that views higher education with suspicion, she knows the challenges inherent to navigating college and career planning and that they intersect: practical, financial, emotional, socioeconomic. She also knows the lifelong impact knowledgeable, invested sources can have on future planning. As a first-year college student in Arkansas, her Modern Greek professor saw her potential and her knack for languages and introduced her to Classical Studies, and a visiting professor taught her about graduate school: both avenues she never knew about before.
The bright spot in both of Dr. Sarah’s careers has been mentoring. She sees it as her responsibility and privilege to equip students with knowledge they may not have previously had access to that enables them to make future plans that align with their values. At Hamilton College she worked with undergraduate students and helped place them in a range of next steps, from doctoral work at Yale University to a clinical masters degree leading to a career as a sex therapist. With a book contract with Oxford University Press and multiple published scholarly articles, she is equipped to consult on writing and research projects as well as career development. She enjoys overseeing all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming a dissertation or a journal article to the final stages of proofreading a final research project. At both Hamilton College and Harvard University, Dr. Sarah has advised student research projects and theses, some of which were funded by competitive grants.
An often missing piece in graduate school advising is expertise on non-academic career pathways. Having successfully secured an academic post and a role outside of academia, Dr. Sarah is able to advise on the practicalities of both pathways as well as the process of discerning which might be a better fit. Her strength is holding presence and empathy for all of the factors that weave into this complicated journey of choosing the right pathway—and then helping chart a targeted map that leads to excelling at it.
Outside of work, Dr. Sarah enjoys hiking, spending time with her adorable Australian Shepherd, hot yoga, reading, and becoming more competent at camping.
