Dr. Sydney, PhD, is a lecturer in the Rhetoric and Writing Studies department at San Diego State University, where she designs and teaches courses at the intersection of writing, digital rhetoric, and student well-being. Her work centers on helping students critically engage with digital media while developing habits that support mental health, agency, and meaningful participation in online spaces.


Dr. Sydney earned her PhD in Education from the University of California, Davis, with a specialization in Language, Literacy, and Culture. Her research explores how critical media literacy can be integrated into writing instruction to address contemporary challenges such as misinformation, algorithmic influence, online conflict, and the emotional toll of constant connectivity. She is particularly interested in translating research into accessible, classroom-ready practices that empower both educators and students.


Her scholarship has been published in peer-reviewed journals and edited collections, including a recent contribution to Transformative Practice in Critical Media Literacy. She is currently developing a public-facing book and curriculum focused on social media, well-being, and critical media literacy for Gen Z learners. In addition to her academic work, Dr. Sydney creates digital content and professional development resources aimed at helping educators adapt to evolving media landscapes.
